Follow-Up: Coastal Flood Warning for San Diego and Orange County Coasts Runs Through Thursday 1 p.m. as King Tides Run Above Predictions

A Coastal Flood Warning from the National Weather Service office in San Diego remains in effect for the coasts of San Diego County and Orange County, California, through 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, with significant coastal flooding possible around the late-morning high tide. San Diego County officials urged coastal residents to watch for road closures and low-lying flooding and published the county's sandbag distribution locations.
When the Weather Service issued the warning at 9:34 p.m. on October 27, observed tides were already running about 1.4 to 1.6 feet above predictions. The warning says the combination could inundate low-lying homes, businesses and infrastructure, close some coastal roads and worsen shoreline erosion.
This week's king tides have been affecting the Southern California coast since early in the week: seawater flooding and partial closures of Pacific Coast Highway were reported around Newport Beach in Orange County, and tides overtopped seawalls at beaches in Los Angeles and San Diego counties.
San Diego County emergency officials advised coastal residents to move vehicles out of low-lying areas, never drive through flooded roads, and sign up for alerts through Alert San Diego. The county lists sandbag pickup sites and hours on its website.
The Weather Service said tides will gradually ease after Thursday afternoon, though elevated tides continue into the weekend and residents should keep checking for updated advisories.
