Nicolas Cage Says He Is 'a Little Bit Homeless' After a Sinkhole Swallowed His Malibu Driveway

Los Angeles — Nicolas Cage, 62, told fans at his Los Angeles Comic Con main-stage panel on October 31 that he is 'currently a little bit homeless.' Asked about his Halloween plans, the Oscar-winning actor said something had happened to his house in Malibu, that he had been living in hotels, and that he would not be able to welcome the trick-or-treaters he usually enjoys.
Cage said he would instead take his four-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica, then watch Stanley Kubrick's The Shining back at his hotel.
The 'something' was the giant sinkhole that opened in the driveway of his Malibu beachfront home in September. The sinkhole began forming on September 7 and emerged on September 8. According to the City of Malibu's proclamation of a local emergency, the hole was up to about 30 feet deep, 30 feet wide and 60 feet long; it swallowed the driveway and cut road access, seven homes on the street were red-tagged as hazardous, and 24 more were to be red-tagged for loss of safe vehicular access — more than 30 households affected in all.
Cage bought the beachfront home in 2024 for $10.5 million. Within days of the sinkhole's emergence he filed three permit applications with the city, including an emergency building permit allowing sandbags to be packed against the beach and the home's exterior for wave protection and to prevent further erosion. He has been living in hotels for nearly two months, and no date has been set for repairs to finish or for his return home.
