Follow-up: AP Declares Democrats Win Control of the Senate, Flipping Six States to Reach 51 Seats

The Associated Press declared on the evening of November 3 that Democrats had won control of the U.S. Senate, ending Republican control of the chamber. The declaration came after the AP called the decisive race of the cycle: Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson in Iowa to win the state's open Senate seat. The U.S. Senate meets at the Capitol in Washington.
Counting is continuing, and results are subject to certification by the states. By the AP's calls, Democrats flipped six Republican-held seats in this cycle — Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas — taking the Democratic caucus to 51 seats; the Senate has 100 seats, and 51 are a majority.
Republicans entered the election holding the Senate 53 to 47, and Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to retake control. The Senate majority determines committee chairs and holds votes on the legislative agenda and presidential nominees; the new Congress is set to take office in January 2027.
GSM previously reported that NBC News and Decision Desk HQ had projected a Democratic Senate takeover earlier in the evening; the AP's declaration settles the question of Senate control. The AP has not yet declared control of the House, though several outlets have projected a Democratic House majority; Senate races in Michigan, Maine and Alaska remain uncalled as counting continues.
