Follow-Up: Brooklyn Jogger Katie Suarez, 28, Has Died After a Random Neck Stabbing; Suspect Still at Large and the $10,000 Reward Stands

Katie Suarez, a 28-year-old bank teller from Brooklyn, New York City, New York, was stabbed in the neck while jogging on the Shore Parkway Greenway on the evening of October 30. Her family confirmed on November 3 that she had died on the night of November 2. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) says the attack appears to have been random, the killer remains at large, and a $10,000 reward offered through Crime Stoppers still stands.
Her mother told reporters outside the family home in Brooklyn that the killer had taken an angel. Suarez was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn after the attack and was later declared brain dead. According to police sources, she was a registered organ donor and was kept on life support while organ donation was carried out, before her family confirmed her death. Flowers and memorial candles have been left near the scene.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters on November 2 that the case bears the markings of a random attack. The department has set up a task force, deployed K-9 teams, drones and scuba units, and is reviewing license-plate reader data from the time of the attack. It is asking joggers, drivers and a food-truck operator who were in the area between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. on October 30 to hand over dashcam or other footage. Police say her phone and jewelry were still on her, there is no indication of robbery or sexual assault, and no motive has been determined.
Law-enforcement sources have told local media that detectives are also exploring one possibility: many people fish off the promenade, and the weapon may have been a bait knife used for cutting fishing bait. That line of inquiry has not been confirmed by police. Kenny noted that the case is similar in some ways to the 2016 murder of Queens jogger Karina Vetrano, although the killer in that case is in prison.
Suarez was running along the Belt Parkway path after work, on her way to meet her father, when she was attacked near Bay 17th Street. She was stabbed on both sides of the neck and ran a short distance before collapsing. There are no fixed security cameras on that stretch of path, which is why police are focused on collecting vehicle footage. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
