DeSantis: With Democrats Holding the Senate, Trump's Chance of Confirming a Supreme Court Successor Is Zero

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis weighed in on the post-election balance of power in Washington on Wednesday, November 4, writing on the social platform X that Democratic control of the Senate transforms the politics of the Supreme Court. According to The Wall Street Journal and Fox News, DeSantis wrote that the chance of confirming a successor to Justice Clarence Thomas or Justice Samuel Alito during President Donald Trump's term is "zero," and probably zero even under a Republican administration from 2029 to 2033. Thomas, 78, and Alito, 76, are the court's two oldest justices.
DeSantis estimated that Democrats could end up with as many as 55 Senate seats, and he warned that the incoming Democratic majority will block Trump's cabinet nominees.
Supreme Court justices are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate. With the chamber changing hands, Trump's judicial appointments for the rest of his term will run through a Democratic majority.
