Schumer: Democrats Will End the Iran War and Use the Purse and Investigations to Check Trump

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer held a post-election press conference at Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee headquarters in Washington on Wednesday, November 4, laying out the agenda of the incoming Democratic Senate majority. According to NPR and The Wall Street Journal, Schumer said Democrats will hold 54 Senate seats, including two independents who caucus with them.

Schumer put ending the war with Iran at the top of the list. "This war must end," he said, vowing that Democrats will use Congress's power of the purse to press for an end to the war and noting that some Republicans have already joined efforts to stop it.

He also promised investigations and oversight of the Trump administration, legal action against the president, and an effort to entangle him in legislative razor wire. Democrats, he said, will drive down costs for American families with the president's cooperation or without it.

Schumer said he was confident he would be re-elected as Democratic leader, even though three incoming senators — Hamilton of Kansas, Jackson of Maine and El-Sayed of Michigan — campaigned on pledges not to vote for him.
