Follow-Up: Salmonella Javiana Outbreak Rises to 65 Cases as FDA Begins Traceback; Implicated Food Still Not Identified

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · Health · GSM News

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated its table of foodborne illness outbreak investigations: the Salmonella Javiana outbreak listed as reference #1424 has grown from 59 to 65 cases, and the FDA has initiated a traceback investigation. The food linked to the illnesses has still not been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The outbreak was added to the FDA's active investigations table on October 28, 2026, with 59 cases reported and no product yet identified. The FDA notes that investigations are in various stages, and that it will indicate only a product category in the table — and will not publicly name a specific product — until there is sufficient evidence to implicate it. For reference #1424, the product entry still reads "Not Yet Identified," the event status is ongoing, and traceback is now marked as initiated, while on-site inspection and sampling have not yet been marked as initiated.

The FDA's CORE Response Teams coordinate investigations of this kind. Anyone who believes they have symptoms of foodborne illness should talk to their health care provider and provide public health officials with details of what they ate before becoming sick, which often aids in solving emerging outbreaks. The FDA will update the table as the investigation progresses.
