Follow-Up: FDA Classifies Lidl Gelato Recall as Class I, Its Highest Risk Level, After Listeria Finding

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Life · GSM News

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified Lidl's recall of a gelato product as Class I, the agency's highest-risk category, meaning there is a reasonable probability that consuming the product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. The product is Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces, sold in 16-ounce (1-pint) clear plastic containers with brown lids, lot 085261, UPC 4 0564897 22458, with a best-by date of March 26, 2028; 1,122 containers are covered.

Background: Lidl US began the voluntary recall on Oct. 16 after routine quality testing found Listeria monocytogenes in a lab sample; after further testing returned a positive result on the product, the FDA classified the recall as Class I on Nov. 3. The gelato was sold between July 19 and Oct. 15 at Lidl stores in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia, and in Washington, D.C. No illnesses had been reported as of the original recall announcement.

Under Lidl's recall notice, shoppers should throw the gelato away or return it to any Lidl store for a full refund, with no receipt required. Listeria can cause serious infection, with pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems at higher risk. (Source: U.S. Food and Drug Administration)
