Follow-Up: Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands Responds to Statements on Joshua Wong Sentencing, Urges Non-Interference

The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands responded on November 7 to statements on the sentencing of Joshua Wong, urging the Netherlands and other relevant countries to respect China's sovereignty and Hong Kong's rule of law and to stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs in any form.
Hong Kong's High Court on November 5 sentenced Wong to 10 years in prison for conspiracy to collude with foreign or external forces to endanger national security; Wong had pleaded guilty in September. On November 6, the Netherlands and several other countries issued statements on the ruling, and the foreign ministries of ten countries issued a joint statement calling for an end to the use of the national security law to prosecute political expression.
The embassy spokesperson said those statements disregard facts, distort right and wrong, and interfere in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, which China firmly opposes. Hong Kong is a society governed by the rule of law, the spokesperson said, adding that Wong's criminal facts are clear, the evidence is conclusive, and he pleaded guilty; the central government firmly supports the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in safeguarding national security and punishing crimes endangering national security in accordance with the law.
The spokesperson added that Hong Kong's law enforcement, prosecution and judicial authorities performed their duties strictly in accordance with the law and protected the defendant's litigation rights, that the proceedings were open, fair and just, and that Hong Kong's judiciary exercises its power independently without external interference. Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong, and Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs, the spokesperson said.
