MELBOURNE — The Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne issued a statement on November 7 on the killing of Chinese food-delivery rider Jianming Feng in central Melbourne, Victoria, Australia: a Chinese citizen was killed in the city's downtown on the evening of November 6 local time, and the suspect has been arrested by local police. The consulate said it immediately activated its consular protection emergency mechanism and demanded that police investigate the case thoroughly, handle it lawfully and impartially, severely punish the perpetrator and effectively protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens.

The consulate said it promptly contacted the victim's family, briefed them on the situation, and is working with the relevant parties to facilitate the family's travel to Australia and the handling of funeral arrangements. It expressed deep grief over the compatriot's death and sincere condolences to the family, and said it would stay in contact with local authorities and actively assist with the aftermath.

Ms Zhao, president of the Melbourne Chinatown Business Association, described the attack and the association's assistance to media. According to her account, Feng was picking up an order at a restaurant when the attacker pushed over his bike at the doorway; when Feng came out to reason with him, the man stabbed him three times, all in the heart area, and another rider who stepped forward was also stabbed. The injured rider collapsed in front of a shop, other riders ran into a shop run by an association member for help, and the shop owner contacted the association, which intervened immediately to help with the rescue and follow-up liaison. Ms Zhao said the consulate contacted the association at the first opportunity and coordinated with multiple parties.

On the family's travel, the association reached the head of Feng's home village in Shaanxi on the night of the incident, who then contacted the family; his wife rushed to Beijing overnight. Ms Zhao said the consulate and the association are fully cooperating with the relevant bodies in China and Australia to speed up the family's visa applications, and asked that the family, in extreme grief, not be disturbed. According to The Age, Xiaowen Cai of the Australian Emergency Mutual Aid Association posted in a WeChat group of more than 60,000 members, located Feng's family in China and guided them on the steps to take. The local Chinese community has also organised a march and candlelight vigil for the evening of Saturday, November 7, to honour the rider.

On the investigation, Victoria Police said on November 7 that Homicide Squad detectives arrested a 51-year-old man in Footscray that morning; he remains in custody awaiting interview, and police are not looking for anyone else. The second rider, 34, was taken to hospital with a stab wound that was not life-threatening. HungryPanda further confirmed on November 7 that Feng was a registered rider on its platform, said a dedicated team is supporting the family, and reminded all riders to stop delivering, leave the scene and call the local emergency number immediately if they feel unsafe.
