Follow-Up: Sen. Murphy Discharged After Stroke, Heads to Rehab and Will Miss Weeks of Senate Votes

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut announced on Friday, November 6, that he has been discharged from The Johns Hopkins Hospital and will spend several weeks at a rehabilitation facility, missing several weeks of Senate votes.
Murphy, 53, a Democrat, called 911 on October 31 after feeling that something was not right with his body while attending his son's hockey game; he felt numbness in his left arm. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later transferred to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where doctors diagnosed a small bleed in the thalamus region of his brain — a small hemorrhagic stroke. "The doctors are very encouraged by the progress I've made so far," Murphy said in a statement. "In order to take my recovery seriously and get back to work on the quickest timeline possible, I will be spending several weeks at a rehabilitation center after being discharged from the hospital today."
Dr. Jose Suarez, chief of neurosciences critical care at Johns Hopkins, said Murphy "has shown tremendous progress, and at the current rate of improvement, we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation." Murphy's office first disclosed the stroke on November 1. The cause of the stroke has not been made public, and no specific date for his return to the Capitol has been given. Congress returns next week after its recess, and Murphy said he will work remotely with staff and colleagues during his recovery.
