Follow-Up: Democrats Win Six New State Trifectas After Midterms; Arizona First Since 1966

The Associated Press called enough legislative races on Friday, November 6, to confirm that Democrats have won control of both chambers of the Arizona Legislature and, with the governor's office retained, have secured a trifecta in the state for the first time since 1966. Republicans had controlled the Arizona House for 60 years and the Senate since the early 1990s. If results hold, Democrats will finish with a 20-10 advantage in the Senate and a 37-23 advantage in the House.
With Arizona, Democrats have won six new state trifectas — control of the governor's office and majorities in both legislative chambers — in this midterm election. The other five are Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Wisconsin. The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) counts 12 legislative chambers flipped from Republicans to Democrats, the most seats and chambers changing parties since the 2010 election, and puts the Democrats' total number of trifectas at 22.
The details vary by state. In Pennsylvania, Democrats flipped the state Senate for the first time since before the 1994 elections, giving the party a trifecta. In Wisconsin, both chambers flipped for the first time since 2010. In Minnesota, the House flipped after being tied between the two parties since the 2024 election, restoring the Democratic trifecta. In Michigan, the House flipped, restoring the trifecta the party lost in 2024. In Nevada, the governor's mansion flipped from red to blue while both legislative chambers were already Democratic. Democrats also broke Republican trifectas in Georgia, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio and Texas. Democrats will hold at least 28 governorships, while the outcomes in Alaska and Kansas remain undecided.
