Follow-up: Chinese Consul General Fang Xinwen Holds Urgent Call With Victorian Premier Ben Carroll Over the Melbourne Killing

MELBOURNE — The Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne said on November 7 that Consul General Fang Xinwen held an urgent phone call that day, at the other side's request, with Ben Carroll, Premier of the Australian state of Victoria, over the killing of a Chinese citizen in Melbourne.
According to the consulate, Carroll said he was deeply saddened and shocked by the death of a Chinese citizen in central Melbourne on the evening of November 6, noted that the killer had been arrested by police, and asked Fang to convey his deep condolences to the victim's family. Fang said he would pass the message to the family promptly, and asked Carroll, the Victorian government and the police to handle the case lawfully and impartially, severely punish the murderer, and effectively protect the life, safety and legitimate rights of Chinese citizens.
The victim was Feng Jianming, a 47-year-old Chinese delivery rider from Shaanxi who had worked in Australia for nearly nine years. On the evening of November 6, he and another rider confronted a man tampering with their vehicles near Frederick Way in central Melbourne and were stabbed; Feng died at the scene and the other rider, 34, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Victoria Police arrested a 51-year-old man in Footscray on the morning of November 7; he remains in custody awaiting questioning. The consulate has activated its consular protection emergency mechanism and is assisting the family with travel to Australia and funeral arrangements. (Source: Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne)
