Saturday, November 7, 2026 · States · GSM News

NEW YORK — The New York City Police Department arrested Sayed Mohassib, 27, on November 7 and charged him with the October 30 stabbing death of Katie Suarez, 28, who was attacked while jogging along the Shore Parkway Greenway in Brooklyn. Mohassib was charged with second-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon. Police said the attack appeared to be random and no motive has been announced. The charges are allegations, and Mohassib is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Suarez had gone for a run after work on October 30 along her familiar waterfront route and was stabbed in the neck at about 8:15 p.m. near Bay 17th Street; her father found her, she was taken to hospital, and she died several days later. GSM reported the case on November 2 and 3, when the attacker was still at large and police were offering a $10,000 reward.

At his arraignment on the evening of November 7, prosecutors said detectives had identified Mohassib from surveillance footage and arrested him at his Bensonhurst home. Law enforcement sources told reporters that he told detectives he did not remember the attack and recalled only waking up covered in blood; police said the knife had been discarded and traced to a landfill, and prosecutors said the victim's blood was found on the walls of his home. His next court date was set for November 10.

Mohassib works as a New York City Department of Education school aide at an elementary school in Brooklyn. He served briefly with the NYPD for about six weeks in 2022 before joining the U.S. Marine Corps, from which he was discharged over mental health issues. The education department has suspended him and said it would move to terminate his employment. According to the New York Post, citing law enforcement sources, Suarez donated her organs after her death, saving five lives.
