11 Shot Near Florida A&M's Bragg Stadium After Homecoming Game in Tallahassee: 12 Injured, Youngest Victim 11

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — A shooting erupted near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium on the evening of October 24, shortly after the school's homecoming football game ended. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell told reporters late Saturday that 12 people were injured, 11 of them by gunfire. Six of the injured are juveniles, the youngest just 11 years old. No one has been arrested.

The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. near Perry Street and Manatee Street, beside the stadium. Earlier in the evening, the Florida A&M Rattlers had lost their homecoming game 31-28 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and crowds were leaving the stadium. Police said preliminary information indicates an altercation between two or three individuals preceded the gunfire. Revell called it an isolated incident and said it was not yet clear whether it was connected to the game.

Revell said six of the 12 injured are adults and six are juveniles, and that one victim is a Florida A&M student. Three victims sustained serious injuries, one of them in critical condition, while the others were reported stable. The twelfth injured person, the grandmother of one of the shooting victims, was hurt while fleeing the scene.

"I stand before you tonight devastated," Revell said at the press conference. Addressing the victims' families, he said: "We hurt with you, and we will continue to get you the answers you so desperately want." He noted that officers carried some victims in their arms to reach transport because the crowds made it difficult for vehicles to get through. The department's Violent Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, with detectives and forensic personnel still working the scene.

Florida A&M issued a campus safety alert at 8:40 p.m. urging people to shelter in place and avoid the area near the stadium. In a later statement, the university said it was aware of the incident on Perry Street near campus on the evening of October 24, that Tallahassee police were on scene investigating, and that the campus remains safe, while expressing concern for the victims and all those affected. Florida State University, across town, also alerted its community, saying there was no indication any of its students or staff were involved and advising them to stay indoors for the night as a precaution.

Police asked anyone with information to call the Tallahassee Police Department at 850-891-4200 or Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS. The investigation is ongoing, and police have not released the victims' names or any suspect information.
