Hawaii International Film Festival Opens: 'New American Perspectives' Spotlights Immigrant Filmmakers, Ke Huy Quan to Give Master Class

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · City · GSM News

The Vilcek Foundation and the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) announced on October 21 the New American Perspectives program at the 46th festival, running October 21 to November 5 on Oahu, Hawaii, showcasing immigrant filmmakers' contributions to contemporary American cinema through screenings, Q&As and a panel discussion.

This year's cohort of five foreign-born artists is headlined by Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan (born in Vietnam), who will host a book talk and a master class. The four guest filmmakers are Henry Ian Cusick (born in Peru), Liz Sargent (born in South Korea), Alex Tarrant (born in New Zealand) and Michelle Zhou (born in China). New films from Cusick and Tarrant will have their U.S. premieres in the program, and Sargent and Zhou bring their feature directorial debuts. Vilcek Foundation President Rick Kinsel said the program, a festival mainstay for two decades, celebrates the power of diverse voices in filmmaking.
