CDC Weekly Update: U.S. Measles Cases Reach 4,410, Up 330 in a Week; Pennsylvania Cases Rise to 1,222

Atlanta — The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Friday, October 16, that measles cases nationwide have reached 4,410 as of October 15, an increase of 330 from its previous weekly update, with 451 measles-related hospitalizations so far this year.
Children and teenagers aged 5 to 19 are the largest group affected, with 1,856 cases, or 42 percent, followed by adults aged 20 and older at 1,787 cases, or 41 percent. Pennsylvania, the state at the center of the outbreak, has reported 1,222 cases this year as of October 14 and 225 hospitalizations, according to state health department data — up from the 1,136 cases reported when GSM last covered the state's figures on October 14. Pennsylvania has reported five measles-related deaths, while the CDC has separately confirmed two measles-associated deaths in 2026 without identifying the states involved. The two tallies rest on different methods: last month the CDC shifted to using National Center for Health Statistics mortality data for measles-related deaths rather than relying on state health departments, a change that has drawn scrutiny.
The CDC said on Tuesday that it would deploy additional support to Pennsylvania to help investigate the outbreak. Earlier this month, New York declared a disaster emergency over the measles outbreak, the first U.S. state to do so.

Pennsylvania's health department subsequently updated its figures: as of October 16, the state had reported 1,260 cases and 238 hospitalizations this year.
