CDC Deploys Added Support to Pennsylvania as Measles Cases Reach 1,136 in State Count

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 — The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday it would deploy additional support to Pennsylvania to help investigate the state's ongoing measles outbreak, after Pennsylvania formally requested federal assistance through the agency's Epi-Aid emergency response program, Reuters reported.
The counts differ between the state and federal governments. Pennsylvania health officials have reported 1,136 measles cases and five deaths linked to the outbreak this year as of October 9, while the CDC has confirmed two measles-associated deaths nationwide in 2026 without identifying the states involved. The differing definitions have fueled a public dispute between Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over how measles-associated deaths should be defined and counted.
The CDC said its teams would work with local health officials to investigate the outbreak, strengthen response efforts and prevent spread; the federal personnel will work under the coordination of the Pennsylvania health department, assisting state and local health departments with case investigation, laboratory testing and vaccination. The agency noted that Texas, South Carolina, Virginia, Kansas, New Mexico and Wisconsin previously requested Epi-Aids and worked with federal teams to bring their outbreaks under control. New York Governor Kathy Hochul last week declared a statewide disaster emergency over that state's measles outbreak and said New York would seek federal assistance.
The Pennsylvania health department said the response is continuing and urged residents to check their measles vaccination records, adding that unvaccinated people can arrange shots through local providers.
