CDC: U.S. Measles Cases Rise to 4,080, Up 193 in a Week; 414 Hospitalized as Pennsylvania Tops 1,100 Cases

Saturday, October 10, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday (Oct. 9) that the United States has confirmed 4,080 measles cases so far this year as of Oct. 8, up 193 from a week earlier and well above the 2,289 cases confirmed in all of 2025. Measles hospitalizations this year stand at 414, about 10% of cases, compared with 244 in 2025.

Children and teenagers aged 5 to 19 account for the largest share, with 1,716 cases (42%), followed by adults 20 and older with 1,635 (40%). Death counts differ by source: the CDC has confirmed two measles-associated deaths in 2026 without identifying the states, while Pennsylvania health officials have separately reported five deaths linked to that state's outbreak. Pennsylvania has reported 1,136 cases, including 219 hospitalizations, as of Oct. 9. The CDC last month shifted to using National Center for Health Statistics mortality data for measles-related deaths, a change that has drawn scrutiny.

New York declared a statewide disaster emergency over measles earlier this week after reporting 108 cases through Oct. 3, 92 of them since July 15 — GSM has covered New York's emergency separately; this story adds the national figures. Measles is highly contagious, and on-time MMR vaccination remains the most effective protection for children. Anyone with high fever and rash plus cough, runny nose or red eyes should seek care promptly and call the clinic first.

Of those, 4,062 were reported by 47 jurisdictions and 18 involved international visitors to the United States. CDC said 42 new measles outbreaks have been reported this year and about 96% of confirmed cases are outbreak-associated.
