KYIV — Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with ballistic missiles in multiple waves from Wednesday evening, October 21, into the early hours of Thursday, October 22. According to Ukrainian officials and local media tallies, the two waves killed one person and injured 22, including four children. The first wave, reported by GSM on Wednesday evening, injured six people and damaged homes, a petrol station and transport equipment on the eastern side of the Dnipro River.

Reuters reported that missiles struck Kyiv again in the early hours of Thursday, with a Reuters witness reporting explosions in the city. Ukrainian officials said 15 people were injured in the Thursday wave, including two 15-year-olds, with eight taken to hospital. The strikes hit six districts of the capital, set homes ablaze, and damaged metro infrastructure on the Pivdennyi Bridge across the Dnipro River as well as an emergency medical center, where six ambulances were damaged; service on the metro Green Line was disrupted.

The same night, Igor Artamonov, governor of Russia's Lipetsk region, said on Telegram that drones hit apartment buildings and a medical facility there, injuring one man. Lipetsk, home to a major steel plant, is some 400 km (250 miles) south of Moscow.

Reuters said the strikes come as U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff held talks this week with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russia's President Vladimir Putin to mediate an end to the conflict that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
