Fire Guts Senior Living Facility in Clinton, Mississippi: More Than 100 Residents Evacuated, No Confirmed Casualties, Officials Say

A fire tore through a senior living facility in Clinton, Hinds County, Mississippi, on Wednesday evening, October 21, destroying much of a building that was home to more than 100 people. Officials said there were no confirmed casualties as of Wednesday night, and crews searched the site into the night to account for every resident.

The fire broke out around 5 p.m. at Brookdale Clinton, on Northside Drive. Clinton is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of Jackson, the state capital. The facility offers independent living, assisted living and memory care services, and many of its residents have mobility issues.

Clinton Fire Chief Levius Buckley said firefighters rescued several residents by getting them out through windows. Images from the scene showed the roof partially collapsed as flames and black smoke stretched into the sky, with older people sitting across the street watching, one in a wheelchair, others with walkers, and one holding a small dog.

Marlee Price-Cook, the city's director of communications, said the majority of the building was gone and that the fire was under control by Wednesday night. She said some residents had been with family members or had checked out for the day before the fire, and that staff were still working to account for residents whose names had not been marked off. Evacuated residents were bused to a church where family members waited outside; local media reported that a reunification point was set up at Heights Baptist Church on Hampstead Boulevard.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said in a statement on X that the state health department, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and multiple fire departments were helping with the response and the search of the building. Price-Cook said Brookdale was making arrangements for displaced residents to be moved to some of the company's sister properties. The city asked the public to avoid the immediate area so emergency crews could work. The cause of the fire has not been announced. (GSM, based on reporting by The Associated Press)
