Follow-Up: Four Hospitalized, 85 Residents Evacuated in Clinton Nursing Home Fire: Crews Stayed Until 3 A.M. as Operator Issues Statement

Clinton, Mississippi: Clinton Fire Chief Levius Buckley released fuller casualty and evacuation figures for the Brookdale Clinton nursing home fire at a Thursday press conference: four people were hospitalized with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, and the Clinton Fire Department safely evacuated 85 residents. The fire broke out around 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, at the Brookdale Senior Living facility at 501 East Northside Drive and has been confirmed to have killed two residents, an 82-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman.
Buckley said two wings of the facility were a complete loss and the center will not be inhabitable for some time. Crews from the Clinton, Jackson, Raymond, Pocahontas and Hinds County fire departments responded to the blaze and did not leave the scene until 3 a.m. Thursday. The Clinton Public School District provided buses to assist with evacuations; residents were either picked up by their families or transported to Morrison Heights Baptist Church to be reunited with them.
Operator Brookdale Senior Living said in a statement posted on the facility's Facebook page: "We are heartbroken by the loss of two residents as a result of the fire at our Clinton community. Our deepest sympathies are with their families and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time." The company said its priority continues to be supporting those affected and providing continued care to residents.
Governor Tate Reeves posted that Mississippi is praying for the residents, employees and families affected, and thanked first responders. Officials said the cause and origin of the fire have yet to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing. GSM previously reported that Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard had released the victims' ages and sexes, and that the fire chief said investigators do not believe the fire was intentionally set.
