Follow-Up: Clinton Nursing Home Fire Victims Were a Man, 82, and a Woman, 81: Chief Says Fire Not Believed Intentionally Set

Clinton, Mississippi: Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard said the two people who died in the October 21 fire at the Brookdale Clinton assisted-living facility were an 82-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman; their names have not been released. Clinton Mayor Will Purdie had confirmed the two deaths earlier on Thursday. Clinton Fire Chief Levius Buckley said two wings of the facility were a total loss, and that investigators do not believe the fire was intentionally set; its cause remains under investigation. The fire broke out around 5 p.m. on October 21 at Brookdale Clinton on East Northside Drive. Firefighters rescued residents through windows, assisted by the Jackson Fire Department, Hinds County volunteer fire departments and several retired Clinton firefighters, with the Mississippi State Department of Health and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency also responding. Evacuated residents were bused to Morrison Heights Baptist Church on Hampstead Boulevard to be reunited with their families; families can go to the church or call 601-926-1224 to speak with a Brookdale representative.
Officials have not released how many residents and employees were inside when the fire started, nor a count of injuries. As GSM reported earlier, the facility housed more than 100 residents, many with limited mobility; much of the building was destroyed, and displaced residents were being moved to sister Brookdale properties.
