Follow-up: New Mexico Confirms New World Screwworm in a Hidalgo County Calf on Oct. 23, Setting a 12.4-Mile Infested Zone

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · States · GSM News

On Oct. 23, New Mexico animal health officials confirmed that a calf near Hachita in Hidalgo County was infested with New World screwworm, and state and federal agencies promptly expanded surveillance and established an infested zone with a minimum radius of 12.4 miles around the affected location. Livestock within the zone must be inspected before moving within or out of the zone and must be treated first if necessary. State Veterinarian Dr. Samantha Holeck said each confirmed case helps determine the possible range of this parasitic fly and identify areas where surveillance needs to be strengthened, and that producers regularly inspecting their livestock and promptly reporting suspicious wounds is important to detecting the infestation before it spreads. State Agriculture Secretary Jeff Witte cautioned that vigilance must not ease as the weather turns cooler, and that maintaining intensive surveillance throughout the winter is necessary to protect livestock health and prepare for the coming year. Before this case, Otero County had also confirmed a case this Wednesday, indicating that the parasitic fly is spreading in southern New Mexico. Officials said monitoring and fly-trapping work is continuing around the affected locations to determine whether the fly has spread beyond the confirmed infested animals, and the latest updates are available at ScrewwormNM.org.
