Newport Beach Braces for More Flooding as Unusually High Tides Continue

In the City of Newport Beach, Orange County, California, the National Weather Service extended coastal flood alerts through Friday afternoon, with another round of high tides expected to bring water levels near 7.7 feet and threaten low-lying streets, homes and businesses. Tides have been running about 1.4 to 1.6 feet above astronomical predictions, and flooding has already reached residential neighborhoods in Newport Beach.
Henk Wiessman of The Fun Zone Boat Company said flooding made access to his dock difficult and forced him to shut down operations on Tuesday, and he had yet to reopen. Forecasters warned elevated water levels could threaten coastal communities even after the highest tide passes.
Newport Beach residents can pick up free sandbags at the city's Corporation Yard at 592 Superior Avenue, Marina Park at 1600 W. Balboa Boulevard, and the temporary Fire Station No. 1 near Balboa Pier, while supplies last. GSM has previously reported this king-tide round's damage tally in Huntington Beach.
