Follow-Up: Bomb-Threat Emails Hit TV Stations Across Europe on the Same Day: RTÉ Evacuates Its Dublin Campus, No Bombs Found

Dublin — Bomb-threat emails titled 'Message to the West' were sent to television stations across Europe on November 6, forcing Irish national broadcaster RTÉ to evacuate its Donnybrook campus in Dublin and suspend programming, while Britain's Sky and Bulgaria's private Nova TV also confirmed receiving threats. No bombs were found at any affected site.
RTÉ said staff were allowed back only after police completed a sweep of the buildings lasting more than three hours; in the meantime its programmes were replaced by music and a pre-recorded message, some for as long as three hours, and news was later broadcast from an outside broadcasting unit. Nova TV's newsroom in Sofia was likewise evacuated, checked and declared safe; its broadcasting was not interrupted and employees returned to their desks. Sky said it was one of a number of media organisations that received a security threat, that it had carried out a security assessment and reported the matter to the authorities.
According to Reuters, the emails claimed an operative had planted an explosive device in the building that would detonate in 45 minutes, closing with the warning that the clock was ticking. They were signed 'Mikhail Andropov' — a surname shared with former Soviet leader Yuri Andropov — and the author claimed to be one of the leaders of the group behind this week's string of bomb threats against passenger flights, warning that this was only the beginning.
The threats follow days of hoax bomb alerts that have disrupted flights from Serbia to Finland to Spain, forcing diversions, emergency landings and security sweeps, with no explosives found so far. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said European security agencies had not yet determined whether the threats to air travel and media organisations were the work of individuals or part of a coordinated attack, and urged the public to remain calm.
