Godzilla Minus Zero Tops North American Box Office With $31.6 Million, a Record for a Live-Action Foreign-Language Film

Rentrak estimates released on Sunday, November 8, put Toho's Godzilla Minus Zero at No. 1 at the North American box office with a $31.6 million opening weekend, the biggest U.S. debut ever for a Japanese Godzilla film and a new opening-weekend record for a live-action foreign-language film in North America. GSM had reported the film tracking toward roughly $31 million after its first day; the Sunday estimates lock in the record, though final Monday figures may adjust slightly.
According to Variety, the overall foreign-language opening record still belongs to the Japanese animated film Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which debuted with $70.6 million in 2025; Minus Zero's mark is the live-action record. Trade reports put the film's global opening at about $63 million, including roughly $31.4 million overseas, with an A CinemaScore.
The film is the direct follow-up to 2023's Godzilla Minus One, directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Minus One opened to just $11.4 million in North America and finished with $57 million, becoming the first entry in the series to win an Academy Award, for best visual effects. Minus Zero premiered at the New York Film Festival in September to similarly strong reviews, and its opening is nearly triple its predecessor's.
Second place went to the animated The Cat in the Hat, adapted from the Dr. Seuss classic with Bill Hader voicing the title role, at $20.5 million. Angel Studios' historical musical Drummer Boy took third with $9.3 million. In fourth, in its fourth weekend, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything added $8.9 million and has now passed $70 million in North America.
