Follow-Up: FDA Lead Alert on Ground Cinnamon Now Lists 21 Products at 2.03 to 7.68 Parts per Million; Wise Wife Brand Recalled in 14 States
HICKSVILLE, NEW YORK — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's public health alert on lead in ground cinnamon now lists 21 products. The FDA said the listed products contain lead at levels from 2.03 to 7.68 parts per million and that exposure to these products may be unsafe; it is advising consumers to throw away the listed products and not to buy them, has recommended that the firms voluntarily recall the products, and said it will update the alert as firms agree to recalls. The alert is the FDA's third public health alert this year for ground cinnamon, issued, the agency said, to ensure the safety of cinnamon used in foods frequently consumed by babies and young children.
One listed brand has already been recalled: SLR Food Distribution Inc. of Hicksville, New York, voluntarily recalled Wise Wife brand ground cinnamon in an announcement posted by the FDA on October 29, because the product may contain elevated levels of lead. The recalled cinnamon was sold in 110-gram (3.88-ounce) clear plastic containers with black screw-top caps, with a best-before date of April 25, 2027 and UPC 0688474302754, and was distributed between September 8, 2025, and June 28, 2026, to retailers in 14 states: Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. The recall followed sampling by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, which found elevated lead levels. The company said no illnesses have been reported to date and that it has stopped distribution.
