Saturday, October 31, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose State lost 21-16 to New Mexico on Oct. 31 at CEFCU Stadium in San Jose, California. An 89-yard interception return for a touchdown pulled the Spartans within five points in the fourth quarter, but a final drive stalled at the New Mexico 34-yard line and a last possession ended with an interception in the end zone, according to San Jose State Athletics.

All of San Jose State's offensive points came from kicker Trajan Sinatra, whose field goals of 25, 24 and 28 yards tied his career high of three in a game. New Mexico scored twice in the second quarter on rushing touchdowns by Scottre Humphrey and extended the lead to 21-9 late in the third on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Toa Fa'avae to Cade Keith, according to the Associated Press.

With 10:47 left in the fourth quarter, Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa returned an interception 89 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-16. It was the first interception and first touchdown of his career, the Spartans' first pick-six since Jordan Pollard's against Fresno State on Nov. 29, 2025, and the longest interception return for a touchdown by a Spartan since Michael Dansby's 98-yarder against Fresno State on Nov. 11, 2023.

San Jose State's defense finished with three interceptions, its most in a game since recording three against New Mexico on Oct. 3, 2025. Quarterback Luke Weaver went 16-of-23 for 190 yards; Carson Clark caught eight passes for 91 yards, his ninth straight game with at least five receptions; Jabari Bates ran for 63 yards on 22 carries, and Dylan Lee led the defense with seven tackles.

San Jose State fell to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the Mountain West. New Mexico improved to 7-1 and 4-0 in conference play. The Spartans next host Northern Illinois on Nov. 7.
