Bryson Fire in Malibu Reaches 52% Containment; Size Holds at About 147 Acres
LOS ANGELES COUNTY — Containment of the Bryson Fire, the brush fire burning north of Malibu, has risen from 39% to 52%, according to a 7:14 a.m. update on Saturday, October 17 on the CAL FIRE incident page, while the fire's size remains about 147 acres (mapped at 146.2 acres). Firefighters worked through the night to strengthen containment lines and extinguish hot spots, and crews continue scouting locations for secondary lines.
On evacuations, orders remain in effect for two zones, KAN-U017 and SYC-U016-A, and warnings remain in place for 12 zones: CRN-U019, LBO-U018, LEO-U015, MAL-C113, MAL-C114, MCR-U021-A, MLK-U020, SYC-U016-B, SYC-U016-C, SYC-U016-D, VST-U046 and WLV-C201. A shelter for residents is open at Agoura High School; animals can be taken to the Agoura Animal Care Center, and large animals to the Pierce College Equestrian Center in Woodland Hills.
On damage and injuries, officials report no damaged or destroyed structures and no civilian injuries as of Saturday morning; one firefighter injury reported earlier remains on record. A total of 721 personnel are assigned to the incident, supported by 65 engines, 20 hand crews and two helicopters, with numerous air tankers from across the state flying suppression missions as conditions allow. Road closures remain in effect at Decker Road and Encinal Canyon Road, Kanan Road and Mulholland Highway, and Mulholland Highway and Westlake Boulevard. The cause remains under investigation. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is in unified command with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.
The Bryson Fire began at 4:41 p.m. on October 15 near Encinal Canyon Road. It was reported at about 200 acres that evening as evacuation orders and warnings spread across multiple zones; mapping on October 16 revised the size to 146.2 acres, and containment climbed through 5% and 17% to 39% by Friday evening. As of Saturday morning, containment stands at 52% with the acreage unchanged.
