Follow-Up: Bryson Fire Near Malibu Reaches 83% Containment; Size Holds at 147 Acres
LOS ANGELES COUNTY — CAL FIRE updated its official incident page at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19: containment of the Bryson Fire, the brush fire burning north of Malibu, has risen to 83%, with its size unchanged at 147 acres. The update comes about 13 hours after the 6:08 p.m. update on October 18, which put containment at 74% — a gain of nine points. City News Service, via MyNewsLA, reported that firefighters hoped to reach full containment on Monday as crews continued strengthening containment lines and extinguishing hot spots.
Containment in sequence: the fire stood at 52% on the morning of October 17, rose to 61% at 5:09 p.m. that day, and all evacuation orders and warnings were lifted at 6:20 p.m.; containment reached 68% at 6:58 a.m. on October 18, an update at 10:21 a.m. that day confirmed no change to acreage or containment, and containment rose to 74% that evening before reaching 83% on the morning of October 19. On evacuations, the update issued no new orders or warnings, and the advisories previously kept in place for Zones KAN-017 and SYC-016-A were not reported lifted; roads closed by the fire had already reopened, and the resident shelter at Agoura High School and the large-animal shelter at Pierce College have closed. Southern California Edison customers who lost power in precautionary Public Safety Power Shutoffs had all been re-energized by Sunday.
On damage and injuries, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) previously reported no structures damaged or destroyed and only minor injuries to fire personnel. The cause remains under investigation.
The fire began at about 4:41 p.m. on October 15 near Encinal Canyon Road, west of Mulholland Highway in the Encinal Canyon area, and was reported at about 200 acres that night as evacuation orders and warnings covered multiple zones; mapping on October 16 revised the size to about 147 acres, and containment rose through 5%, 17% and 39% before reaching 52% on October 17, when all evacuation orders and warnings were lifted that evening; containment reached 74% on October 18 and 83% on the morning of October 19.
