Holmes Documentary 'You Can See Everything' Opens to $15 Million, the Biggest Documentary Debut in Over Two Decades

LOS ANGELES — "You Can See Everything," the A24 documentary directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, opened in 855 theaters on October 16 and grossed an estimated $15 million in its first weekend — about $17,544 per theater — finishing second at the North American box office behind "Street Fighter" (about $31 million) and posting the biggest opening for a documentary in more than two decades.
The records stack up three ways: according to Rentrak, it is the second-biggest opening ever for a non-music documentary, behind only 2004's "Fahrenheit 9/11" ($23.9 million); the biggest opening for any film released on fewer than 1,000 screens since "Borat" in 2006; and the largest documentary debut of any kind since the 2013 concert film "One Direction: This Is Us" ($15.8 million). The nearly three-hour film (174 minutes) had been expected to open at $7 million to $8 million. A24 reported more than 2,000 sold-out screenings by Sunday morning, with 70 percent of moviegoers under 35, and the film holds a 99 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The production was itself a secret: the filmmakers shot with Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans during the final 34 days before Holmes reported to federal prison in 2023 following her convictions for wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud investors, with material spanning three years. The film premiered as a surprise screening at the Telluride Film Festival in September, and in it Holmes attempts to persuade the filmmakers of her innocence. (GSM, via CNN and TheWrap)
