Follow-Up: Fielder Defends 'You Can See Everything' Methods at Savannah Panel as Academy Doc Branch Members Weigh In

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Film · GSM News

Nathan Fielder, co-director of the Elizabeth Holmes documentary 'You Can See Everything,' addressed the film's unconventional techniques at a documentary filmmakers' panel at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival this week, The Hollywood Reporter reported exclusively. The A24 release has grossed nearly $50 million in North America, one of the strongest runs for a documentary in decades.

The panel, moderated by The Hollywood Reporter, came amid debate over how the Academy's documentary branch will treat the film. The branch has historically been cool toward celebrity subjects, wide theatrical releases and big box office, and wary of techniques such as reenactments; popular documentaries including 'Won't You Be My Neighbor?' and 'Jane' were previously passed over for nominations.

Branch member Amir Bar-Lev voiced strong support, invoking Werner Herzog's notion of "ecstatic truth" to argue that techniques such as reenactment can convey a deeper authenticity, and that the Oscar should reward craft over subject matter. Chai Vasarhelyi, who won the best documentary feature Oscar for 'Free Solo,' also praised the film's formal innovation and popularity.

Fielder said he and co-director Lance Oppenheim did not set out to be unconventional, but included methods such as reenactments out of a commitment to accuracy and honesty, and that acknowledging the camera's presence — and its effect on the people being filmed — was integral to truthful storytelling.
