Raman Wins Los Angeles Mayor's Race as Bass Concedes, 52.1% to 47.9%

Thursday, November 5, 2026 · California · GSM News

The race for mayor of Los Angeles was effectively decided on Thursday, November 5, as incumbent Mayor Karen Bass conceded defeat shortly before midday and City Councilmember Nithya Raman led with 52.1 percent of the vote in the latest count in Los Angeles County, California. Figures released Thursday by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk showed Raman with 429,450 votes to 394,796 for Bass, at 47.9 percent — a lead of 34,654 votes, up from 26,124 on Wednesday night.

In her statement, Bass said: "While this is not the outcome we hoped for, the people of Los Angeles have spoken. I have called Councilmember Nithya Raman to congratulate her on her victory, and I have committed to ensuring a smooth and seamless transition. Moving this city forward is what Los Angeles needs from all of us." She added: "I love Los Angeles. I believe in Los Angeles. And I will continue to ensure the promise of a better life belongs to all of us."

The count reversed after election night: Bass held a narrow lead in the first tally of early ballots released on Tuesday night, but Raman moved ahead as ballots cast close to and on Election Day were added, and she has extended her lead in every update since. As of Thursday morning, more than 700,000 ballots from Tuesday's election countywide were believed to remain to be tallied, though it was unclear how many were cast by Los Angeles city voters. Counting continues and final results await certification by the county registrar; Bass's concession makes the outcome effectively clear. CNN, NBC News and Decision Desk HQ had earlier projected Raman the winner.

Raman, 45, represents District 4 on the Los Angeles City Council and will become the city's first South Asian mayor. Speaking to supporters on election night, she said the election was about change and that voters had said "enough is enough" to the status quo in a city she described as engineered to resist change. She also said she would patiently let the vote-counting process finish.

Bass, 73, took office in 2022 as the city's first woman mayor. She had campaigned for four more years on her record in wildfire recovery, opposition to federal immigration raids and efforts to reduce homelessness. With Bass's concession, the mayoral transition process will begin; Raman's inauguration arrangements and the certified final results are to be announced by the city and the county registrar.
