[Video] Melania Trump Hosts Russian and Ukrainian Representatives at the White House, Urging Peace More Enduring Than a Temporary Ceasefire

At 11 a.m. ET on November 5, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump hosted representatives of Russia and Ukraine at the White House in Washington and delivered remarks calling for a full peace deal between the two countries, urging “something more enduring than a temporary cease-fire.” According to pool reports, it was the first time representatives of the two warring nations had sat down together at the White House as the war nears the end of its fifth year.

In her remarks, Mrs. Trump looked back on the temporary ceasefire she helped secure in Oleshky, in Ukraine's southern Kherson region. The events in Oleshky, she said, can “build a powerful flame of peace,” adding: “What matters is not the modesty of this beginning, but the determination to turn it into something extraordinary.”

Those joining her included Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova, both of whom oversaw the evacuation of Oleshky, and Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev also attended the closed-door meeting that followed.

In a statement issued on November 3, the Office of the First Lady said Mrs. Trump independently initiated engagement between the two warring nations and successfully secured a ceasefire in Oleshky and the surrounding Kherson region, calling it an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American first lady. The ceasefire took effect in the early hours of October 27 and held until November 1; about 800 civilians were evacuated and humanitarian aid was delivered. Dmytro Lubinets said both sides upheld their commitments throughout the ceasefire.

According to a decree published by Ukraine's presidential office, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on November 4 awarded Mrs. Trump the Order of Princess Olga, First Class, in recognition of her role in brokering the ceasefire.

The White House meeting was not itself a formal peace negotiation. According to multiple news reports, the next round of U.S.-mediated trilateral talks between Russia and Ukraine is scheduled for November 10–11 in Abu Dhabi, and the humanitarian channel led by the first lady gives negotiators another line of communication to build on. The White House's official channel has posted the full video of her remarks.
