Zelenskyy Warns Trump's Europe Security Framework Could Be 'Dangerous': Rejects 'Yalta 2.0' and Being Divided by Russia

KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned in a CNN interview aired on November 6 that discussing a new European security framework proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with Russia before ending the Russia-Ukraine war could be dangerous, and he flatly rejected any "Yalta 2.0" arrangement.
"We don't want to have Yalta, Yalta 2.0. We don't want to be divided by Russia," Zelenskyy told CNN anchor Jake Tapper. The Yalta reference is to the 1945 conference at which U.S., British and Soviet leaders settled Europe's postwar order, a meeting associated in much of Central and Eastern Europe with the division of the continent into spheres of influence.
He said he learned of the framework idea on November 5 during a phone call with Jared Kushner and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff while preparing for the U.S.-Ukraine-Russia trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11. After meeting Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House on November 5, Trump had said a Ukraine agreement would be a "big agreement" involving more than Ukraine.
Zelenskyy insisted on sequencing: negotiations must first focus on ending Russia's war against Ukraine, then on security guarantees for Ukraine, and only then on any broader arrangements between Europe and Moscow. He said Ukraine supports a full ceasefire as well as a limited truce covering energy infrastructure or maritime operations, but that Russia had so far shown no sign of readiness to act. He also rejected territorial concessions, saying Ukraine is not ready to leave Donbas or give up its territory.
He added that Ukraine is currently a member of neither the European Union nor NATO, and that talking about a new security architecture before the war ends could be even more dangerous for the EU.
