Update: Cooley Fire in Mendocino County Reaches 57% Containment at 1,365 Acres

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · California · GSM News

MENDOCINO COUNTY, California — The Cooley Fire, burning west of Cloverdale in Mendocino County, California, continued to gain containment. CAL FIRE's official incident page, last updated at 3:35 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, lists the fire at 1,365 acres (revised up by one acre from the previously reported 1,364) and 57% contained — up 12 percentage points from the 45% reported at 5:21 p.m. on October 19.

In an 8:38 a.m. update, CAL FIRE said the weather is changing and rain, possibly with thunderstorms, could affect the fire area: moisture is expected to help moderate remaining hot spots, but thunderstorms can create downdrafts and wind shifts that may increase fire activity and endanger crews. The terrain continues to challenge firefighters, who are strengthening containment lines and mopping up hot spots while suppression repair is also underway; an intel flight on Tuesday afternoon was to identify the latest perimeter and hot spots, with temperatures in the mid-60s, light winds and high relative humidity. A 3:24 p.m. update described Konocti Crews 4 and 5 improving dozer line ahead of firing operations in Division A, clearing trees and brush while a CAL FIRE C-130 dropped retardant on the fire.

According to the incident page, resources assigned total 869 personnel, 47 engines, 33 hand crews, 10 dozers and 10 water tenders, plus 102 other assigned personnel, with numerous air tankers from across the state flying missions as conditions allow. The fire began at 5:05 p.m. on October 16 near Elkhorn Road and Cooley Ranch Road, is under the jurisdiction of the CAL FIRE Mendocino Unit, and its cause remains under investigation. No evacuation orders or warnings have been issued for this fire at any point, damage inspectors have confirmed no structures damaged or destroyed to date, and no injuries have been reported.
