Update: Cooley Fire in Mendocino County Reaches 80% Containment at 1,365 Acres as Command Transitions to Local Unit

The Cooley Fire, burning near Yorkville in Mendocino County, California, is now 80% contained. In an incident update posted at 6:36 p.m. on October 22, CAL FIRE said rain that day provided some assistance to firefighting efforts but also created access challenges later in the afternoon.

CAL FIRE said that over the next couple of days, as conditions become warmer and drier, resources will continue working throughout the fire area to mop up hot spots, strengthen containment lines, and patrol established lines to identify and address any areas of concern, reinforcing containment and keeping the fire within its current perimeter.

In an earlier update at 7:07 a.m. on October 22, CAL FIRE announced the incident had officially transitioned to CAL FIRE Mendocino Unit management under a three-day plan. Resource levels will continue to be reduced over the next several days as the incident moves toward completion, with remaining resources focused on strengthening containment lines, monitoring conditions within the burn area, and identifying outstanding suppression repair needs.

The fire started on October 16 and has burned 1,365 acres. GSM previously reported that containment stood at 67% on October 20, when crews had begun backhaul operations and suppression repair. CAL FIRE has said no structures were damaged or destroyed in the incident. The above is based on CAL FIRE's official incident page updates of October 22.
