Texas Senator-Elect Talarico Says He Is Ready to Work With Trump: He Credits the President on the Border and Lists Immigration and Housing as Common Ground

James Talarico, the newly elected U.S. senator from Texas, said on Fox News on November 4 that he is ready to work with President Donald Trump on a range of issues, including border security, lowering energy costs and cutting housing regulations. He defeated Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton in the November 3 election, becoming the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate election in Texas since 1988.
On immigration, Talarico said it is one of the areas where the two could work together. He favors comprehensive immigration reform that includes border security, and said credit should be given where it is due: Trump has done a better job of securing the border than the previous administration. He also said Congress should create more legal pathways for immigrants who want to come to the United States.
On housing, he said he wants to work with the president, noting that Trump is a builder by background. He argued for cutting the red tape and regulation, for which he acknowledged his own party shares responsibility, so that millions of new homes can be built across the country.
His other listed points of common ground include suspending the federal gasoline and diesel taxes to lower fuel costs, criminal justice reform, and legalizing marijuana at the federal level, an issue on which he said he agrees with the president.
During the campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized Talarico in public and campaigned in person for Paxton. After his victory was confirmed on election night, Talarico said he looks forward to working with the president for all 31 million Texans. His win was one of the key seats in the Democratic Party's retaking of the Senate in this midterm election.
