Los Angeles Mayor's Count Updated Again: Raman at 460,772 Votes, 52.70%, Lead Widens to 47,253

LOS ANGELES, California — The count in the Los Angeles mayoral election was updated again on Thursday afternoon, November 5: Councilmember Nithya Raman has 460,772 votes, or 52.70 percent, to 413,519 votes, or 47.30 percent, for incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, a lead of 47,253 votes. The margin is wider than the 34,654-vote lead on Thursday morning and nearly double the 26,124-vote lead on Wednesday night.
Bass conceded on Thursday, calling Raman to congratulate her and promising a smooth transition. Raman becomes the first challenger to defeat an incumbent mayor since 2005. The Associated Press has not yet called the race; final certification is expected on November 27, and Raman's term begins on December 14.
Raman, 45, is an urban planner, born in India and a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University; Bass is 73. Bass led in the initial tally of early ballots on election night, but Raman moved ahead as ballots cast close to or on Election Day were added, extending her lead with each subsequent count. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder said on Thursday morning that more than 700,000 ballots from Tuesday's election remained to be tallied countywide, so the mayoral totals will continue to change.
