Follow-Up: 36 Russian Ballistic Missiles Hit Kyiv Overnight; 9 Wounded, Northern Bridge Struck and Closed

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia fired 36 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight on Nov. 6-7, of which only four were shot down, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday. The barrage also involved 172 drones over Kyiv and 12 other regions and wounded at least nine people, including a child. GSM's first report on Friday night had captured only the opening phase of the attack — at least six ballistic missiles in the first salvos, three people wounded in the city and a building housing a kindergarten destroyed; the full scale of one of the largest strikes this year emerged only as Ukrainian agencies published their tallies on Saturday.

Ukraine's Air Force said that as of 9 a.m. Saturday its air defenses had shot down or suppressed four missiles and 149 drones, with several drones still in the air and combat operations continuing. Zelenskyy said Russia had also used North Korean-made ballistic missiles against energy facilities, citing preliminary findings from investigations at impact sites. He said: 'When Russia tries to plunge Kyiv — a city of millions — and the entire country into a blackout, Ukraine must not be left to face this alone.' He again urged greater U.S. support and faster deliveries of Patriot interceptors, and said Moscow was stepping up strikes to build pressure on Ukraine ahead of talks in Abu Dhabi.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the 816-meter Northern Bridge across the Dnipro River was hit and closed while repair work got underway, and that water pressure in the capital had been stabilized; earlier on Saturday he had described the city's energy situation as 'extremely difficult,' affecting heating and water supply. Ukraine's Energy Ministry said the missile attacks damaged networks that carry electricity from nuclear power plants to Kyiv and central regions, as well as multiple other power facilities, with the most widespread outages in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions and in the eastern Kharkiv, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions — separate from the scheduled rolling blackouts imposed to protect the grid.

Russia's Ministry of Defense confirmed on Saturday that it had targeted the Northern Bridge, saying it facilitated the transport of weaponry, military hardware and specialist equipment for Ukraine's armed forces. It also said it had struck an industrial facility in the capital producing Flamingo missiles, a power station, an electrical substation and a plant producing ammunition, explosives and gunpowder in the wider Kyiv region, as well as an electrical substation in the Zhytomyr region.

Kateryna Korniichuk, 64, was at home with her granddaughter when an attack hit. She told The Associated Press: 'The first blast wave threw us against that wall and then against the other wall, because we were in the corridor. It's very hard. No sleep, no peace — nothing. I'm old, I can handle it, but what have the children done wrong?'

The strikes came days before a new round of talks: negotiators from Russia, Ukraine and the United States are to meet on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, in what would be the fourth round brokered by the Trump administration.
