Yemen Escalates: Saudi-Backed Forces Push Houthis Near Bab el-Mandeb

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces launched a major counteroffensive against Iran-aligned Houthi fighters near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, advancing toward the coastal city of Mocha and retaking positions seized by the Houthis last month.

Reuters reported rapid coastal advances including an airstrip in Dhubab district near the strait's mouth, with extensive Saudi air support. The government claimed major gains, though Reuters could not independently verify their full extent and the Houthis rejected the claims.

The strait links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden — one of the world's most critical maritime corridors. Control of nearby territory directly affects commercial shipping, oil transport and Red Sea trade security. (Via Reuters)
