Saudi Arabia Says It Intercepted a New Wave of Houthi Missiles and Drones

RIYADH — Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a new wave of missiles and drones launched by Yemen's Houthi movement on Saturday, according to dpa and Reuters, as coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the interceptions included two missiles fired toward the southern city of Khamis Mushait, two drones near the capital Riyadh and one drone in the Eastern Province. Saudi officials reported no casualties or damage.
Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia intercepted four drones within hours on Saturday across Riyadh, the Eastern Province and the south. The figures given in the coalition statement and in wire reports differ slightly; all are Saudi accounts of the interceptions.
The barrage is the latest in a recent series of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. GSM previously reported that on October 16 a ballistic missile fired toward Yanbu was intercepted while two missiles fell at Aden airport without casualties, and that Egypt and Saudi Arabia signed a joint defence agreement on October 17. The Houthis control northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, and have long confronted the Saudi-backed Yemeni government in the country's civil war.
