Saudi Arabia Hit Twice in One Day: Intercepted Drone Debris Kills Two at Shaybah Oilfield, King Fahd Airport Attack Kills One and Injures Eight

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia was struck by two deadly attacks on Wednesday, October 21. Saudi air defences intercepted a drone that was attempting to hit a facility at Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield, the Energy Ministry said, Reuters reported. Falling debris following the interception killed two residents — one Filipino and one Nepali — and injured two others, one Pakistani and one Indian, the ministry said, citing an official source. The debris sparked a fire in a contractor's vehicle outside the facility's perimeter, and operations at the field were not affected, the ministry said.

The same day, the US State Department ordered the departure of non-emergency personnel and their family members from its missions in Saudi Arabia.

Later on Wednesday, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam was targeted by an attack on Wednesday evening, Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said in a statement posted on X, Reuters and ANI reported. The attack killed one resident and injured eight others, with injuries ranging from minor to critical; all the injured were transported to hospital to receive medical care, and the attack also caused property damage, the extent of which is being assessed, GACA said, adding that further updates would be provided. The authority's statement did not specify the nature of the attack.

The Associated Press reported that renewed fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces has broken a four-year truce, and that last month debris from an intercepted Houthi drone killed a Yemeni resident of Saudi Arabia — the first civilian casualty since the Houthis increased their attacks against the kingdom. Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport was struck multiple times by the Houthis this month and shut down on October 10, the AP said.
