Follow-Up: UN: Fighting in Yemen's Taiz Has Displaced More Than 82,000 People This Month, Prices Up at Least 50% in the City

The UN aid coordination office, OCHA, reported on October 28 that hostilities in and around Taiz governorate in southwest Yemen continue to drive families from their homes, with more than 82,000 people displaced this month alone, the majority from Taiz governorate. Taiz City itself is increasingly cut off by fighting between Houthi forces and Government forces. The UN human rights office put the confirmed civilian casualty toll at 240, half of them children.
Conditions inside Taiz City are deteriorating rapidly, OCHA said: humanitarian partners distributed the few remaining food packages last week, and families now depend on markets where prices have surged by at least 50 per cent. Water supplies have fallen by half and cooking gas is very limited, while hospitals continue to report that medicines, oxygen and fuel are running out. Since October 8, aid partners have not been able to move between Taiz City and districts to the south, and supplies in Aden and in warehouses in the Al-Turba area cannot reach the people who need them.
Since August, the UN and partners have reached more than 163,000 displaced people across Yemen with emergency assistance, and teams have screened more than 67,000 children and pregnant and breastfeeding women for malnutrition, OCHA said.
