Follow-Up: Vance Says US-Iran Talks Have Made Progress, With No Deadline Set for Resuming Strikes

Washington — U.S. Vice President JD Vance told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Monday, November 2, that the United States has held a number of "good conversations" with Iran and that talks aimed at ending the war have made some progress. Asked whether Washington had set Iran a deadline before strikes resume, he answered directly: "No, we haven't set deadlines."
Vance was returning to Washington after midterm campaign stops in New York and Ohio. He said he had spoken with President Donald Trump about the negotiations about an hour earlier, and that "the President and I both feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement. We're going to keep on working at it." He added that the Iranians remain unpredictable and that Trump retains both kinetic and non-kinetic options.
Vance stressed that Washington's central requirement is to make sure Iran does not rebuild the nuclear program that was destroyed in earlier strikes. Any agreement, he said, requires a firm and verifiable commitment from Tehran not to rebuild the program; the United States sees a pathway to a deal, but only on that condition.
Trump sent a similar signal the same day. In a Truth Social post on November 2, he wrote that Iran wants a settlement "as soon as possible" and that "it could happen"; at an event at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, he also said Iran wants to make a deal. Trump told Axios the same day that he was in no rush to decide on resuming military action, and when a reporter asked as he left whether he was considering striking Iran after the midterm elections, he answered, "No."
The remarks came as indirect U.S.-Iran talks continued and fighting had not stopped. The talks are being held through mediators including Qatar and Pakistan. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on November 2 that consultations were intensive and that a revised Iranian proposal could allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen within two days if Washington accepts Iran's conditions. The same day, U.S. forces carried out limited strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz, which U.S. officials described as a response to Iranian fire at U.S. aircraft.
