Yemen: Encirclement of Taiz Cuts Nearly 250,000 People Off From Essential Healthcare as 12 Hospitals Risk Closure

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · World · GSM News

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on November 2 that the humanitarian situation in the southwestern Yemeni city of Taiz is worsening: all roads to the city are now closed due to the fighting and no commercial supplies are getting through. Nearly a quarter of a million people have lost access to essential healthcare due to lack of supplies, including more than 186,000 children under the age of five and 23,000 pregnant women. Twelve hospitals are at risk of closing while demand for healthcare rises with worsening living conditions, and in just a week more than 1,400 cases of acute diarrhoea and suspected cholera, which spreads mostly through contaminated water, have been reported.

UN News said Taiz is being encircled by the Iran-aligned Houthi forces. Fighting between the Houthis and Yemen's internationally recognised government has intensified, with the Houthis advancing to within about 80 kilometres of Aden, the government's temporary capital, as reported separately by GSM.

Taiz has long sat on the front line of Yemen's civil war, and the encirclement and supply cutoff are putting sustained pressure on the city's hospitals and water systems.
