Follow-up: Maine Senate Election: AP Calls Race for Jackson over Collins

The Associated Press formally called Maine's U.S. Senate race in the early hours of November 4 for Democrat Troy Jackson, who defeated Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins, who was seeking a sixth term. Maine is in New England in the northeastern United States, and its capital is Augusta. As GSM reported earlier, Collins called Jackson on election night to concede and said she would ensure a smooth transition; the AP call now formally confirms the result.
The AP results page snapshot showed 421 of the state's 644 precincts reporting, about 65.37 percent, with an estimated 75.68 percent of the vote counted; Jackson had 307,726 votes to Collins's 267,551. The AP declared Jackson the winner at 1:02 a.m. Eastern on November 4.
Jackson, a former president of the Maine Senate, became the Democratic nominee at a state party convention in late July after the original nominee withdrew, and campaigned for only about 100 days. Collins had represented Maine in the Senate since 1997 and was the longest-serving Republican woman in the chamber; Jackson will be the first Democrat to represent Maine in the U.S. Senate since 1995. Results are unofficial until state canvassing and certification are complete.
