Michigan Senate Election: AP Calls Race for El-Sayed, Set to Become First Muslim U.S. Senator

The Associated Press called Michigan's U.S. Senate race in the early hours of November 4 for Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers. Michigan is in the Great Lakes region, its capital is Lansing, and the Senate seat was open because Senator Gary Peters is retiring.
The AP results page snapshot showed 2,883 of the state's 3,946 precincts reporting, about 73.06 percent, with an estimated 86.35 percent of the vote counted; El-Sayed had 2,226,784 votes to Rogers's 1,983,477, about 52.9 percent to 47.1 percent. The AP declared El-Sayed the winner at 2:27 a.m. Eastern on November 4.
El-Sayed, 42, the son of Egyptian immigrants, is a former Wayne County health director and public health official; he will become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. In the August Democratic primary he narrowly defeated Representative Haley Stevens by about one percentage point, despite Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Peters backing Stevens.
Rogers, a former congressman, ran for Michigan's other Senate seat in 2024 and lost to Elissa Slotkin by 0.34 percentage points. Results are unofficial until canvassing and certification by the secretary of state's office.
