Tennessee Governor Election: AP Calls Race for Blackburn, the State's First Woman Governor

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Associated Press called Tennessee's governor's race on the evening of November 3 for Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, who defeated Democratic candidate Jerri Green to become the first woman elected governor in Tennessee history, succeeding term-limited Governor Bill Lee. Tennessee is in the southeastern United States, and its capital is Nashville.

The AP results page snapshot showed 1,793 of the state's 1,817 precincts reporting, about 98.68 percent, with an estimated 98.73 percent of the vote counted; among the two leading candidates, Blackburn had 950,259 votes to Green's 902,546, a margin of about 48,000 votes, while independent candidate David Hatley took about 9.3 percent. It was Tennessee's closest governor's race in decades, and Green conceded shortly after 10:30 p.m. Central on election night.

Blackburn has represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate since 2018 and was previously the state's first woman elected to the Senate. She must resign from the Senate before she is sworn in as governor on January 16, 2027. Results are unofficial until state canvassing and certification are complete.
